===== Information for Users ("READ-ME") ================
W E L C O M E T O E A R T H W A T C H !
The EARTHWATCH 3.5 program graphically displays a map of the world in
color showing the 24 hour night/day cycle due to the earth's rotation,
the monthly phases of the moon, and the earth's annual trip around the
sun, showing the passing of the four seasons.
Two separate programs are included: EWC (CGA graphics), and EWV (VGA
graphics).
A Mercator projection map of the world will slowly scroll eastward
across the screen in real time as the continents move from pre-dawn
darkness through sunrise, daylight, sunset, and back to night. You may
choose from three map types: elevation, natural, or national boundaries.
The shape of the daylight zone changes almost imperceptably from
day to day as the seasons progress, showing shorter days in winter and
longer in summer (for the Northern Hemisphere -- vice-versa in the
Southern Hemisphere).
Sunrise/sunset times and percentage of daylight for your designated city
and date are calculated and displayed. The phase and position of the
moon are also displayed numerically and graphically.
The VGA version displays the Lat/Long coordinates and major city names
as you move a mouse-driven cursor over the map.
The Almanac screen displays additional ephemeral information including a
comparison of sunrise/sunset times with the previous day's, the number
of days remaining until the start of the next season (solstices &
equinoxes), and more.
Follow the sun's progress along its annual trek around the Analemma,
the figure 8 pattern found frequently on globes that shows the sun's
declination (apparent north-south excursions in the sky) and the
"equation of time."
The earth's 24 time zones are shown graphically, indicating the local
time worldwide and whether that location is experiencing night, day,
dawn, dusk, or anywhere between.
You may highlight up to ten locations around the world to monitor the
status of various cities, etc.
All of this may be done accurately in real time or for a past or future
date and time.
The EARTHWATCH program will run on any IBM compatible PC equipped with
CGA or VGA graphics support. A Microsoft compatible mouse is required
to use the latitude/longitude tracking & display option. Also, EWV
builds temporary bit-map image files requiring 310K bytes of free disk
space.
EARTHWATCH consists of a total of 34 files, 28 of which are required for
the VGA version and 9 for the CGA (3 are shared by both). They may all
be installed onto one directory on your fixed disk, from which either
program may be run, or split into two separate directories.
The VGA files are:
BRUN45.EXE EWV35.EXE MAP1.INT MAP3.GRN
COLKEY.EXE GAZ35.DAT MAP1.RED MAP3.INT
COPYM1.BAT HELPSC.EXE MAP2.BLU MAP3.RED

READ_ME.BAT 412 20-Mar-1997 03:50a 9192DB7B

VENDOR.TXT 216 20-Mar-1997 03:50a 13796CEE
===== Installation =====================================
Welcome to EARTHWATCH 3.5!
EWATCH35.ZIP contains two self-extracting files, one for a VGA version
and one for CGA. You can install either or both in separate directories
or the same directory on your hard drive. After installation, the VGA
program has twenty-eight files associated with it, while the CGA has
nine. Of these, three are shared (BRUN45.EXE, GAZ35.DAT, and
README.DOC).
The installation process requires that you designate target directory(s)
on your hard drive. If you already have an older version of Earthwatch
in a directory on your hard drive and wish to designate that same
directory, that's fine, but I recommend that you first delete all of the
old files to get rid of unnecessary clutter.
If you have EWATCH35.ZIP on a diskette, insert it in your floppy drive
(usually A or B). How you now enter the installation command depends
on whether you are operating from DOS, Windows, or Windows 95/97.
From DOS, first enter A: or B: designating the floppy drive that
holds the diskette. From Windows, click on FILE - RUN, and designate
the drive (A: or B:). From Windows 95/97 click on START - RUN and
designate the drive (A: or B:). Now you are ready to enter the
installation command described below.
If you have EWATCH35.ZIP in a directory on your hard drive, the procedure
is similar, again depending on whether you operate from DOS, Windows,
or Windows 95/97. From DOS, go to the directory containing EWATCH35.ZIP.
From Windows, click on FILE - RUN and designate the directory containing
EWATCH35.ZIP. From Windows 95/97 click on START - RUN and designate the
directory containing EWATCH35.ZIP.
Now for the installation command. For the VGA version, enter
INSTALLV C:\DIRNAME, where DIRNAME is the directory you wish to
designate to contain the VGA version program files. It is not necessary
to create this directory in advance: If it does not exist, the install
program will create it.
To install the CGA version, enter INSTALLC C:\DIRNAME. Again, DIRNAME
may be the same or different from the one chosen for the VGA
installation.
Once installed, you can run the VGA or CGA program from DOS by entering
EWV or EWC respectively from its directory. From Windows or Windows 95/,
97, run by double clicking on EWV.BAT or EWC.BAT from the File Manager
(Windows) or the Explorer (Windows 95/97). Better yet - from Windows
or Windows 95/97, create an icon from which to launch EarthWatch.

===== About VENDINFO Files =============================
Each VENDINFO.DIZ file contains extensive information about a product.
This "human-readable" section is followed by a compressed data record
useable by automated tools. The data record allows BBSes and other
distributors to automate package handling, and provides users with a
wealth of product information. VENDINFO tools (free viewer for users,
